A small town on an Australian road

The name

Federal is a very small town on Binna Burra Road, halfway between Possum Creek and Goonengerry, in northern New South Wales. It sits in the hills above Byron Bay, on the coast between Sydney and Brisbane. There is not much to do there but dream and watch the rain fall on quiet streets and the phone box.

The founders

The concept was created in Barcelona by two Australians, partners Tommy Tang and Crick King. Together they brought some of Australia's atmosphere, light and freshness to Spain.

No fixed mealtime

A key part of the brand's success is the very Australian idea of continuous service, with no fixed mealtime. You can have breakfast at eleven, lunch at five in the afternoon and dinner at half past ten at night. This whole site is built on that idea: the day bar you see on every page tells you what can be ordered right now, and in which house.

The kitchen

The Australian coffee scene is known worldwide for its innovative approach to food, cafés and service. Its mix of English, European and Asian cultures and its rich, varied produce have created a modern and singular way of cooking. Healthy, delicious food, simply prepared, with fresh ingredients, locally and ethically sourced wherever possible.

The rooms

Our cafés are always full of light and well designed: elegant, modern, informal and, most importantly, comfortable. Ten houses, each with the character of its neighbourhood.
